Twilight Time
In 1944 a trio called the Three Suns recorded an instrumental called Twilight Time. In 1958 the prolific hitmaking songwriter Buck Ram put lyrics to it for the Platters and it became a major hit for them. (The Three Suns had to sue Ram for their writer credits and royalties).
The amazing Tony Williams' voice was what powered all the Buck Ram-Platters golden hits: Only You, The Great Pretender, and this tune. Can't come close to that, but I does my best.

Trombone Cholly 2024

This is, I believe, the second time I've posted this, but after something like 15 years I have a better sense of the song now, maybe. The original (and best, in my book) recording is of Bessie Smith in the early 30s, featuring the slide-y riffs of the real Charlie Green, a trombonist from the Fletcher Henderson band. I knew the song first from Erik Darling's and Hoyt Axton's versions in the ear...

I wasn’t having much success doing this one at first, until I decided to put away the picks and do it in a different style from Lead Belly’s, while still incorporating a bunch of his riffs and the peculiar “five-less” turnaround that you find in every blues he played in E positions. Also his verses, which differ from the standard “you made me love you, now your man has come” lyric. I mentioned ...

Chuck Berry was the only one of the OG's of the earliest Rock And Roll (that would include the pantheon of Carl, Elvis, Jerry Lee, Little Richard, and Fats) to write his own consistently witty, often mordant, original folk poetry story-songs. I consider Mr. Berry to be a direct precursor to Mr. Zimmerman in the following decade in that way. Real American semi-urban folk music. By the way, I don...

Crankin' 'em out! Here's an old Gord fave of mine with just the one guitar but a fair amount of post-effects added. I notice that my favorite old blue sweatshirt is finally getting all threadbare with loose threads dangling from the right cuffs. Oh well, at this age I have a bunch of dangling random threads myself.
Walk On By (2024 version)

Well, I have done two videos of this song in times past, the earlier one a "fantasy video", meaning several me's accompanying me, and one from 2017 with just a solo piano. Both versions are *ridiculously* too fast I don't know what the heck I thought I was doing in 2009 and 2017, but anyway, here's the 2024 one, the New 'n' Way-Improved version. I hope.

OK, it’s a Tom Waits song and of course nobody can do Tom like Tom, and I wouldn’t even attempt it. Gotta do it in my own voice, such as it is, lest I sound like the Cookie Monster in a futile attempt to render Tom’s signature growl, his boozy kargyraa, his magnificent barbaric yawp. So here’s my... my bubonic yelp, or something.

Another maestro-piece from Maestro Zimmy. No electronics, just the AKG mike, with a bit of the audio from the pad camera mixed in.

Seemed like time for one on the old keyboard for a change. One of Zimmy's best songs, methinks, but then there are lots of his best songs.

Before I get to the main thing here, my bad for my getting confused on the penultimate couplet of the lyric; I accidentally said “hold you” in place of “have you” and then failed to make it work by quickly following it with “once again”. Instead, it came out “hold you…back again”. Didn’t exactly mean that. As a governor of Texas once said, “Oops.” Oh crumb, another oops. I just realized I said ...

I feel that it’s time I post something a bit more serious than I’ve been doing lately. What to post? A song unafraid to state uncomfortable truth, yet a song of brave hope and benevolent confidence in our future, yes, a song of joy and strength for our times. So here it is, folks. From 1957. I wasn't even 10 years old yet. In actual seriousness, I loved Bobby Darin throughout his too-short care...

Like all the songs Ray Charles was recording in the late 50s and early 60s, this one was iconic for me as a budding musician. Nobody can sing it like Ray, of course, and his is the version I'm basing my humble attempt on. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a Louis Jordan song first. Anyway, here 'tis by "the little old video-maker, me". That, by the way, is a reference to a TV a...

You might recognize some of the lyric of this song from “Outside Woman Blues”, and they’re both variants of a common keep-yo’-hands off-her blues theme. I can’t find any authorship attribution online, so I’m giving Brownie (provisional) credit as songwriter. Maybe I should have included the harmonica god Sonny Terry in the credit, as this melody and set of lyrics is directly from Sonny and Brow...
The Stranger

This song is long, repetitive, and leads to no satisfying conclusion; thus, it is perfectly made for its subject and is, to me, a masterpiece. One of Mr. Cohen’s earliest songs, this sad narrative of codependence and addiction haunted me when I first heard it, and has ever since. I have no bright ideas of how to “improve” the setting, so I’m doing as Leonard did, and accompanying with just solo...
good job on my fav song of all time
Well done !
OMG this guy can sing and play flawlessly,
Absolutely amazing .
been wanting to learn this recently. great job.
That was great, well played too.
Always dug this acoustic guitar riff.
An unexpected treat!
Nice and easy
Very musical

This awesome 👌 👏 👍
I thought this was gonna be the song from chicken little
Really great cover :-))
Great Cover :-))
Great Cover :-))
Am listening’ … and smilin’
I absolutely love it.
My gosh, it's 15 years after I posted and you found it now! Thanks very much. I still do this tune at gigs.
By far the best cover ive seen. awesome!
Hi Alonzo, what a great cover and rendition. Superb stuff. Are you playing with normal tuning or not? I’d love to know. Thank you.
Thanks, Alan. OK, class, pay attention: I'm playing as if in the key of D and in Drop D tuning; except that my 12-string is tuned two whole steps below standard guitar tuning (C to C); meaning that if there were no capo there I'd actually be in the key of B flat. Except for the second-fret capo, raising it back up a whole step, and voila, I end up playing in the true key of C. There will be a quiz on this tomorrow.
Fantastic.
Your voice seems stronger with every new recording you do. Keep it up!
nice work pal
Buenísimo trabajo una vez más, me ha gustado mucho Alonzo, enhorabuena y gracias por compartirlo, like 6
Hi Alonzo. Don from Edmonton, Canada 🇨🇦. I'm a fan. Love your 12 string playing. As a 12 string beginner, I enjoy your guitar instruction videos. Thanks 😊.
Loved this.
It was wonderful, thank you! And God Bless George Harrison for his soulful music!
Wow, there is talent!
Excellent rendition!
Funny. Brilliant and funny.
way better then the original, great rock and roll voice, amazing guitarwork❤❤❤
Your guitar work seems to keep getting better with every song, "Alonzo."
I always enjoy songs about dancing.
Yes, me too, but it just occurred to me this song might be a case of double entendre. maybe it's really about fishing: reeling 'em in with the boat rockin'.
Excellent, been laughing for ages, so true. 😂
you make that guitar sing....is it drop D tuning or is the whole guitar done a step?
Thanks! It's drop-D, and about 40% of my repertoire is in that tuning nowadays. But also, that guitar I tune down two whole steps (C to C), so with the capo at the second fret, I'm actually in true C.
Well played, Alonzo. 😉Keep it up!
Awesome Alonzo! I think Gord would be proud :)
Awesome cover
It's very, very old. I've heard Jelly Roll Morton credit himself as the composer on the Library of Congress tapes, but there's no reason to believe his version was anything more than an arrangement, if that. Many old-timers had a version cobbled together from vernacular scraps. Favorite version is Lead Belly with Woody and Cisco. I love the wild, anarchic sound of all those recordings. Nice job, amigo.
Thanks! Yes, well according to Jelly Roll, he invented everything, didn't he? The Huddie-Woody-Cisco hoot is the only version I've ever heard of this one (as opposed to "Alabamy Bound", a song I've never been too excited by, though Ray Charles made somewhat of a silk purse out of it.) Anyway, do you know where I might hear any other versions of this one?
Well done I love it.
Great cover!
Never heard this song. It's so good!!
you're the best
muito bom Alonzo
Bravo! Great version. Burt and Hal elevated each other, in my opinion.
wow! terrific surprise to see this in my feed! love the song and well done (well played and great video too)
❤wauw, so much soul, looooove it!!!
This popped up on my UA-cam page (prob 'cause I'd been listening to Waits) and I absolutely LOVE it. Is that a 12 string Larivee? Pretty sweet! I have one of their small "parlor" guitars. Good punch. I read your intro about singing it in your own voice, and you sound GREAT. Your voice reminds me a lot of Cat Stevens, but with a bit more growl. Great playing, too. Liked and subscribed. All the best!
